Through this activity, I have learned more about the types factors surrounding HIV/AIDS and how they are affecting different types of people around the world. I was also able to view some messages of hope through photographs: how simple trees or groups of people talking together could symbolize the spreading of HIV/AIDS education and those affected by HIV can still leave their mark on the world. The photos I found the most interesting included the picture titled "Consequences" where three maple trees of different colours were displayed. The description was very powerful in explaining the artist's thoughts on the metaphor of change exemplified in nature and in the process of HIV/AIDS on one's life. I had never thought of the metaphor in this manner, and found the artist's observations to be very accurate: how trees change leaf colours to create beautiful collages of hues during the autumn, while "changing" into an HIV-positive person will in no way hinder one's ability to make a difference in the world. Another photo I found striking was the "Untitled" photo of a collage of condoms. Until this point, I had not fully realized the true importance and effectiveness of condoms in preventing HIV/AIDS, and how one's access to condoms can affect the way they choose to protect or not protect themselves. Both photos helped me better understand the concepts they were portraying. Becoming an HIV-positive person is a result of a bad decision, but one can make up for it by striving to live life to the fullest despite the obstacles of HIV/AIDS. Accessibility to preventative needs such as condoms will promote one's realization on the importance of safe sex. If I were grading myself on participation in this activity, I would give myself a fairly high mark because I took the time and effort to carefully and thoroughly look through the gallery, reflecting on the artists' descriptions and other TIGed users' thoughts before adding in my own opinions on the photos. I have learned a lot from this activity; viewing the gallery has opened my eyes to new ways of thinking in tackling HIV/AIDS.
